Curves are not one standard formula

An instructor may add points, rescale to a new maximum, use a square-root transformation, drop items, or adjust grade boundaries. This page handles one explicit linear rule with a cap.

Do not infer a curve from class rumors or a desired grade. Use the published method and order of operations.

How the estimate is formed

adjusted score = min(score cap, (raw score + added points) × factor)

Assumption: The order is addition followed by multiplication. Reverse or omit an operation when the instructor's rule says otherwise.

Rescaling is different from adding points

A rule that maps the highest raw score to 100% usually changes every score proportionally or through a defined linear transformation. It is not equivalent to giving every student the same point addition.

When the announced curve has an intercept and slope, translate those terms explicitly rather than guessing a factor from one student's result.

Applying a capped linear curve

A raw 72% receives six added points and a 1.05 factor. The uncapped and adjusted score is 81.9%, an increase of 9.9 percentage points.

A cap can hide part of the adjustment

Students near the maximum may receive a smaller visible increase because the uncapped result exceeds the reporting limit.

Keep both capped and uncapped values when checking arithmetic, but report only the score allowed by policy.

After the first result is recorded, compare uncurved performance across attempts.

Follow the announced curve

  • Write the curve exactly as announced.
  • Confirm whether addition occurs before multiplication.
  • Apply the cap after the adjustment.
  • Keep the raw score for comparison.

Common planning questions

Is adding six points the same as multiplying by 1.06?

No. A flat point addition and a proportional factor produce different changes.

Can the factor be one?

Yes. Then only the flat adjustment and cap apply.

What if the instructor uses a square-root curve?

This linear calculator does not model that method; apply the exact published formula separately.

Can a curve lower a score?

A negative point adjustment or factor below one can, although that would need a clearly stated policy.

Publish the transformation with the result

A curved percentage should be accompanied by the raw score, added points, factor, cap, and operation order. Otherwise another reader cannot reproduce it.

When letter thresholds are adjusted instead of scores, preserve raw percentages and apply the new boundary table; do not force that policy into a point-addition model.
