Questions that affect interpretation
Is normalization the same as curving?
No. This is a linear scale conversion.
Can the destination maximum be smaller?
Yes. The percentage position is preserved on either a larger or smaller scale.
Should letter grades be converted this way?
Only when the grading policy defines a numeric scale behind them.
Moving from a fifty-point scale
A score of 42 out of 50 is 84%. On a 100-point scale, the proportional normalized score is 84.
Working through the denominator
Scope: Linear rescaling preserves percentage position; it does not curve scores or alter relative performance.
Carry the proportion to the destination scale
- Verify the raw score belongs to the original maximum.
- Choose the required destination scale.
- Rescale without intermediate rounding.
- Apply any reporting rule afterward.
Make the scale conversion transparent
Report the original score as well as the normalized result. A converted number without its source can be mistaken for directly awarded points.
If bonus points permit scores above the original maximum, define that exception before using a model capped by the maximum.
When several components use different maxima, normalize each only if the aggregation policy expects equal scale treatment.
Do not convert rounded letter grades back into pseudo-precise numbers; the lost within-band information cannot be recovered.
Linear conversion assumes zero and the maximum occupy corresponding endpoints on both scales. It is inappropriate when the destination embeds a floor, passing threshold, nonlinear curve, or categorical band.
If the normalized value feeds a weighted grade, carry full precision into that later calculation and apply the course's rounding rule only once.
When publishing a table, label converted points clearly so readers do not mistake them for the original assessor-awarded total.
For batch conversion, validate endpoint cases before processing every score: zero should map to zero, the old maximum should map to the new maximum, and an intermediate value should preserve its percentage. These checks catch reversed maxima and accidental use of already normalized values.
Retain precision until display
Rounding the original percentage before multiplying can shift the converted score.
Keep the raw score and both scale maxima in the record.
The converted result can then apply a stated curve rather than a scale conversion, derive the raw percentage from rubric points, or apply a documented later-attempt rule.
